Randy and Ellie traveled to Amsterdam the weekend after Thanksgiving to join Randy's brother AJ and see his new documentary about Kurt Cobain.
The documentary was being shown at the International Documentary Festival Amsterdam (IDFA). We left on Saturday, Nov 24 and arrived early Sunday morning. The first showing was on Sunday evening.
Ellie slept a little on the plane ride, but Randy stayed awake and pulled an all-nighter. We checked into the Hilton, where John Lennon and Yoko, had their famous nude bedroom interview and immediately headed to Anne Frank's home. What a moving experience that was. After connecting with AJ, we went to the Rijksmuseum. While much of it was closed for remodeling, we saw a good cross section of Dutch artists. We will definitely return when the entire museum is open.
On Monday, after our first full nights sleep, we went to the
Van Gogh Museum and the Rembrandt House and Museum. The Van Gogh Museum had
just opened a special Expressionism exhibit, which was a great surprise. At the
Rembrandt House, we found that 2006 was the 400th anniversary of his
birth - another pleasant surprise.
